I'm also going to look around for another Fishman under-saddle pickup I have hanging around somewhere, to see whether it's the right size for my bridge. The plan is for me to remove strings, pull out the saddle, and see whether I see any damage. He also suspects the preamp may have gone bad, or that the connection between the pickup and the preamp has corroded. He supposes that the pickup could have gotten damaged over time, that the crystals in the piezo pickup have degraded over time and that's causing a problem. He agrees that it's hard to figure how the foil could get damaged sitting at the bottom of the saddle slot, covered by the saddle. I related all this to the guy who works on that guitar for me - a very experienced local tech. I have a hard time seeing that, as I change one string at a time and I can't imagine the saddle shifts that much. He suggested it could be from the saddle shifting during string changes. I asked how the foil could damaged while sitting under the saddle without the saddle being removed. So I don't know if it's all blame-able on the foil, or if he's just focusing on the hum. ![]() He said this could cause the grounding-related hum, though he didn't address the strange noise I picked up at the outside gigs, or the intermittent nature of the problem. The tech suggested this might be a result of damaged foil on the pickup. No noise I could hear but bad grounding hum that goes away when I touch the metal plug on the cable.ĭoes anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this noise-problem, no-problem, noise-problem, grounding problem?Īnother update: I contacted Fishman tech support. This morning I plugged it into my Focusrite interface to my computer. Because it’s a piezo pickup and a small preamp, I’ve been inclined to think it’s something to do with the preamp circuitry. So the problem must be in the guitar because I changed everything else. Spinning around didn’t change it – not that I thought it would, because this isn’t hum being picked up by a mag pickup. I swapped instrument cables and used a bandmate’s preamp/DI and still heard it. I pulled the 9v battery out and taste-tested it. It sounds a little like smartphone interference so we put all the phones on stage into airplane mode – no difference. I took that out of the path and used the soundman’s Whirlwind DI – still heard it. On Sunday I played outside again and was experiencing the sound again. Two weeks ago I played in a club and had no problems. I blamed it on the fact that I couldn’t use my preamp/DI (Fishman Aura DI) so I went straight to the board down a 12’ instrument cable. Three weeks ago I played an outside farmer’s market gig where the guitar was emitting a strange noise that I associate with some sort of digital-EMI- kind of thing. This pickup comes with a small battery-powered internal preamp that’s intended just to get the signal to an external preamp in good shape before going on to the board. I have a Larrivee dread with a Fishman Active Matrix piezo under the saddle.
